The Host (2013)

Stephenie Meyer is indeed one of the best writer when it comes to science fiction romance story where she introduced us to a whole new imaginary world we never knew existed before. After gain a huge success from legendary love story by Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan, now Mrs. Meyer came to awe her readers (once again) by another epic love story of an alien and a human being. Not that I’ve read the novel already, I just be able to watch the movie since I’ve already gave up from seeing the thickness of the novel. But the novel must be good if they can portray it in an amazing movie. Like previous Meyer’s creation, The Host also based on a pure imagination. But still, it’s not all about action and science, she’s not forget to put on an enchanting love journey which can make her reader’s (or in this case, her viewers) heart flutter.

The Host tells a story of an invasion by an alien which in this movie portray as a soul who take on human body and live inside it. Those human are their host who can do nothing because the alien take over everything. Through the whole invasion and taking over human body, there is one soul and body who unexpectedly can live together. A human named Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) is one of a few survivor who refuse to be taken over by the invasion, but one day she got caught and decided to commit a suicide by jump from a third floor. Unfortunately her body is not smashed, so the alien can use her body to be the host of another soul named Wanderer. What other aliens not know is that Melanie is still living inside Wanderer. She’s communicate and be friends with Wanderer.

Unlike any aliens who seems so brutal and doesn’t care about human condition, Wanderer is a soul who can relate to Melanie’s life. She saw that Melanie is left her brother and her lover when she decided to commit a suicide. With her sympathy for Melanie, Wanderer decided to help her find Melanie’s loved ones. Unfortunately, her intention got caught and the Seeker (Diane Kruger) decided to kill Melanie and move Wanderer to another body. Confuse and refuse to be parting from Melanie, Wanderer runaway from town to find someone who can help her and Melanie. Because of Melanie’s strong aim, she’s ending up finding another human survivor, which also includes Melanie’s lover and little brother. But Melanie’s plan is not going as smooth as she thought, knowing that an alien has been lived in Melanie’s body, a pack of human survivor are not believe her and arrest her as a prisoner. Now she has to convince her family, friends, and lover that she’s still living inside Wanderer’s body.

This movie is a bit boring in the beginning but got really interesting from the middle through ending. I’m not a regular fan into science fiction movie. Believe it or not I haven’t watch any so-called Star Trek movie, it’s totally not cool, I know, but like I said in the previous post, I’m not the action movie kind of person nor science fiction. You can call me a shallow minded girl who likes to watch drama and romance only, but that’s truly what I am. It’s not that I haven’t watch and like any science fiction or action movie, I have plenty of those kinds of movies, but my heart still goes for drama and romantic comedy type. But since now there are a lot of science fiction movies who include romance thingy, this genre slowly became my favorites. Let’s say Twilight Saga for example, then Hunger Games series, and Mortal Instruments series (which by the way make me fall in love all over again with Jamie Campbell Bower), etc. Doesn’t it spoil your hunger for another romantic story? I say yes. Now, The Host became another science fiction romance movie who I can add into my favorite movie collections.

It’s not pure science fiction. If I may say, it’s actually a romance story in science fiction way. This movie is actually based on a romance charm, but Stephenie Meyer’s brilliant mind put it on science fiction world which makes the story even more enticing. My overall comment about this movie is that so far I can’t ever disappoint with anything that came from Stephenie Meyer’s head. Not to mention how this movie equipped with such an amazing effect and marvelous set (I don’t know if they’re filming it in the studio or not, but if they actually filming the whole dessert and cave scenes in the real dessert and cave, I must say AH-MAZING!). As the viewers, I’m not only spoiled by the delicate of the story, I’m also captivated by the magnificent set and view almost through entire movie. The director may want to portray the exact scenery like what Stephenie Meyer describes in her novel. On some point, I’m also in awe by the angle of the camera.

So I must say it’s (almost) a complete package movie if only they can spice things up in the beginning.

Like any other Stephenie Meyer’s work, The Host also can make me believe in the beauty of love and the people (or in this case soul) which involved inside of it. What interesting is that Melanie’s love story is not too interesting to me. Like vampire-human love story in Twilight Saga, alien-human love story in this movie is the one who makes my heart flutter even more. Melanie and Jared’s (Max Irons) love story is not completely unattractive. It is full of passion especially when they just met each other for the first time. But that kind of story is a bit common. So I don’t find it too interesting. It’s Wanderer and Ian’s (Jake Abel) love story who is more entitling and daring. Ian is such a sweetheart and cute lover. I find myself smile foolishly when it comes to his scene. I'm a 100% Team Ian! Like her previous work, Meyer also describes this unusual love story beautifully, from the first time they met until they finally realize their feelings for each other. It’s sweet and cute! But putting on another love thingy aside, this movie is not forget to implicate few sci-fi scenes, where they put on a soul to a human body.

I may warn you, if you looking for any superb action scenes in this movie is you turn a wrong lane. Unlike Twilight Saga series that still have few amazing action scenes, action is something this movie lack. I hope for an impressive war or fight when the Seeker caught Wanderer, but all I got was nothing. So if you looking for sci-fi and romance, this movie is recommended, but for action seeker, I can guarantee you that you won’t like this one.

I’ve been liking Saoirse Ronan since watching her first in The Lovely Bones. Later I watched her in Atonement, where she plays another excellent act. The same thing she does in here. Playing two roles and two characters at the same time is not the easy things to do. Yet, she still pulls things off perfectly. She can portray a rebel, free spirit, cool Melanie as well as when she has to be kind, soft, and daze as Wanderer at the same time. Like what I predicted before when watching her at The Lovely Bones, Saoirse grew up into a beautiful and classy woman. I envy her face and body. The fact that she can kiss two handsome guys at the same time makes me even more envy.

Pretty same like Saoirse Ronan, I also have putting my eyes on Max Irons when I first watch him in Red Riding Hood. I pity his character in that movie. Luckily he gets picked by the girl in this movie. For acting point, I don’t find him as dazzling as Saoirse. I just find his acting okay. Not too good not too bad. But who knows if he can be an amazing actor someday. With his picture-perfect face and body, I don’t think it’s impossible.

As much as I love Max Irons’s Greek God face, my heart goes directly into Jake Abel. I love him even more in here than watching him in Percy Jackson the series. He’s as sweet as sugar when he confessed her pure love for Wanderer and start to caring for her. He’s not as stand out as Max Irons in the beginning of the movie, but near the ending he stole my attention.  I like to watch him more in action and romance movies. I believe he will be a badass action movie’s cast and a wonderful romance movie’s sweetheart.

Another reason why I love The Host is because they put on Imagine Dragon’s Radioactive as their original soundtrack! I’m the fans of Imagine Dragons’s Night Visions album. Radioactive is one of my favorite songs among another their amazing’s work. Hearing this music on this movie which by the way portrays the exact situation of what they’re lived in on the movie is the perfect ending. They wrapped the movie perfectly by using Radioactive. I don’t really notice another music besides few scoring and Radioactive.

I will put 9 out of 10 for The Host.

The Face Reader (2013)

Never truly in love with any historical or action drama, I’m more of a romantic comedy type, but strangely I find this one interesting. The length of the movie is more than two hours, but I enjoy every minute of it. I used to get bored or fall asleep while watching this kind of movie, but it never happen with this one. In fact, I get more excited and my eyes widely open nearing the ending. The story itself is already entitling. I love Lee Jung Jae in this movie. No wonder everyone called him a star and every woman screaming over him, he’s wickedly handsome in this movie.

The Face Reader set during the Joseon Era where the man name Nae Kyung (Song Kang Ho) is known as the best face reader in that time. Just by looking at someone’s face, Nae Kyung be able to predict what that people has done in their past, what his/her jobs and what will happen to he/she in the future. He’s basically has the same ability as what shaman has. Even though he has a great talent, he still living in a poor condition. Together with his son, Jin Hyeong (Lee Jong Suk) and his brother in law Paeng Hun (Cho Jung Seok), they lived in a shack up on the mountain. They’re living by selling brushes. Actually, Nae Kyung came from a noble family, but because of his father did crime in the past, he and his family expel from society.

One day, a pretty woman name Yeon Hong (Kim Hye Soo) who owns a gisaeng house in town came to see Nae Kyung and ask him to work with her in her place. She promises him that he will be showered with money and getting out the life he’s been living. Meanwhile, his son Jin Hyeong, who always want to be an official and build justice run off from home to fulfil his dream. After his son left, Nae Kyung decided to take Yeon Hong’s offer and come to town. Nae Kyung then not just turn into a popular face reader who open his practice in town, he’s also become the King’s accomplice. With his face reader ability, King Munjong (Kim Tae Woo) asks Nae Kyung to search a traitor who will snatch his throne. Unfortunately he failed to identify the real traitor, Prince Suyang (Lee Jung Jae), who with his deadly ambitions later tries to snatch the throne from a young crown prince (Chae Sang Woo) that replace his father after King Munjong died.

This movie is complicated yet interesting. Like any others historical drama, this movie also takes time to introduce their viewers into the main storyline. But unlike other boring historical story, The Face Reader manages to tell one by one of the story in a catchy way. I love the story that has continuous acts from the beginning until the end. The Face Reader has it. In the very beginning of the movie, we’re already introduce to see how great the main character power is and in the end we’ve in awe of realizing that it is right. The movie is not all about history or war. What i like from The Face Reader is that it has a romantic comedy side. Although the portion is not as much as what you’ll see in romantic comedy production, it still gives me a couple second of laughter.

The story is actually common when you talk about historical thing. There is always an opposition, a traitor, treason, and a war. But what interesting from this movie is that how the face reader can hold an important role to be the part of those things. It’s the life of a face reader who takes a main focus in the storyline, which is why I thought this movie is different from any historical drama or movie. Not to mention the beautiful relationship between a father and a son who definitely will bring the viewers into tears.

The actors and actresses of the movie are the real hero. I find that they really put on a good act and portray their role perfectly, especially Lee Jung Jae. This is the third time I watch him in a movie production and he never disappointed me. I never thought that he will play an evil kind of look amazingly. Maybe that is why he sentenced a nickname as an amazing actor. I have watched him in The Thieves and Il Mare, but his performance in The Face Reader is the best.

On the other hand, this is my first time watching Song Kang Ho acts. Apparently he’s a popular actor in South Korea. This is again, not a surprise. He really did a good job portraying the life of a sloppy yet genius face reader. This is certainly not the last movie I’ll see from him.

Same like Song Kang Ho, this is also my first time watching Lee Jong Suk. Though he’s not the main character in this movie, he’s still leaving a deep impression by his role. I have to admit that his angelic face took over my attention the most in this movie. His act is as good as his picture-perfect face. I want to see him play the bad guy sometime.

I will give 9 out of 10 for The Face Reader.

“That’s because you never met him. He knew everything. He figured out everything just by looking at a face. He was the greatest face reader in Joseon.” – Han Myung Hoi (The Face Reader)

The Bling Ring (2013)

This movie is an exact example of how your life would turns to be when you get eaten by pop culture lifestyle temptation. Though many people said that they don’t really like this movie because of the boredom and randomness, I kinda like it. Not because this movie  are so light and easy to understand, but because this movie tells today’s youth generation to be careful of what they’re doing and think of the consequences in any steps they take. It’s a good thing that Sofia Coppola turns Nancy Jo’s writings into this movie. The movie that based on true events always interesting to me. I haven’t read the articles of “TheSuspect Wore Louboutins”, but I surely would like to read it. I really like my time watching this movie. I don’t think I waste my time at all, because the phase is fast and I don’t realize when it’s already end.

The Bling Ring tells a story of five high school students who get obsessed with celebrities’ lifestyle and what they’re wearing. Their obsession make they decided to burglarize few celebrities’ home when they’re out of town. The gang which also known as Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch consist of Rebecca Ahn (Katie Chang) which known as the group leader, Marc Hall (Israel Broussard), Nicki Moore (Emma Watson), Chloe (Claire Julien), and Sam (Taissa Farmiga). Rebecca and Marc are the first two who start the stealing by robbing few interesting items in Paris Hilton’s house.

Rebecca and Marc met in Indian Hills high school after they transferred from their old school because serious problems. Rebecca introduces Marc to her obsession and unhealthy habit by robing people property in unlocked park cars and home. It’s getting serious when they decided to rob celebrities’ house by searching the address through cyberspace. Along with the rest of the group they start their luxurious life by wearing the celebrities’ stolen items. Driving an expensive cars, sitting and order pricely drinks in night clubs, taking picture of money and their branded items, smoking pots and doing drugs, are become their lifestyle. The gang becomes seriously famous for their lifestyle until their careless acts got caught by the authorities.

As what I say in the beginning, I always like movie that based on true events. Sometime it eliminates the unnecessary points. Sadly though, this movie has some scenes that’s unimportant and had no point to the story. However, the beginning is really interesting, when there were some interviews with the gang after they got caught and when they tells the reason why they do such things. I think it will be more exciting if Sofia could cast the real member of the bling ringers; either put them in the end of the movie or maybe showing the real footage of their court. But anyway, this movie is light and if you love pop culture and obsessed with how the celebrities spend their life and time, you really should watch this movie, because from this movie you can see that you don’t have to own anything you want.

I’ve ever read about Nick Prugo (the true bling ringers member) in one magazine and how he’s robbing Audrina Patridge’s house. At first I thought the reason of their robbing is because they’re out of money and trying to get a better life. After watching this movie I know the exact reason why they’re doing such things. It’s just for showing off. Adding with the amazingness of today’s social media and how “selfie” become the next big things in a cyberspace’s world, the bling ringer’s act is somehow the step of how youth nowadays would like to be. Like Marc said in one of his line “We want to be a part of the lifestyle.” That is the actual reason why they’re committing the robbing. Beside Rebecca’s sick obsession of wanting to wear and experiencing things her fashion icon, Lindsay Lohan, did. Not to mention Nicki Moore’s act which portray the typical teenager who willing gave everything she has just to be famous and known.

How they spend day in the beach and how they spend night partying or clubbing are known as how celebrity or Hollywood reality show’s (The Hills, Laguna Beach, The City) casts spend their life. They are literally the victim of Hollywood lifestyle. And I think bringing that story will gave youth to think twice about what they’re doing.

Emma Watson is definitely the main hero in this movie. I never thought that she can play a well-act bitch. She really gets out of her Hermione character. The way she talks, stare, dance, and anything she did in this movie make her like a shallow Hollywood kid. Now that after seeing her playing such character, I would like to see her more in that kind of character, beside her nice and angelic role.

The other casts who caught my attention is Katie Chang who played the role of Rebecca Ahn. I can see her obsession with celebrities through her eyes when she robbed those celebrities’ house and especially when she’s in her fashion icon and main obsession house, Lindsay Lohan.  Even though she’s not yet in Emma’s level, I think she’s a promising actress.

The music already captive me from the very beginning of the movie. Crown on the Ground bySleigh Bells is definitely a great choice. It shows the ideal lifestyle their living into. I don’t really pay attention to another soundtrack, but mainly this movie filled with hip hop and electric songs, which again fit perfectly with the storyline.

Finally, I would give 8 out of 10 for this movie.

“I think we just wanted to be part of the lifestyle. The lifestyle that everybody kinda wants.” – Marc Hall (The Bling Ring)
